SURVEY OF ALL REPORTS ON MALTREATED OLD PEOPLE, ADDRESSED TO A FREE TELEPHONE NUMBER FOR THE LAST TWO YEARS (WALLOON REGION OF BELGIUM)

CAPAM, the Centre d?Aide aux Personnes ?g?es Maltrait?es (center for help to maltreated old people) can be addressed on all working days to a free phone number, by any interested persons.
In two years, from the 28th November 2003, 3057 calls were received.
2186 were identified and reliable, the others being errors or jokes.
1583 related to a situation of maltreated person.
Other calls concerned informational or educational requests.
731 files on cases of maltreated persons have been opened.
The most frequent complains concerned financial matters (29,6 %), or psychological pressure. Bodily harm occurred in 14,5 % of cases.
70,3 % of the mentioned victims were women, 20,9 % were men. The other calls were about groups where both women and men could be involved.
The objectionable treatments occurred for 73,9% in the homes of the victims, for 21,5 % in institutions; 4,6 % of the places were not identified.
In 30,8 % of the cases, the ?victim? herself, or himself, called directly.
The pointed responsible person was a member of his or her family in 59,4 % of these situations.
In 30,4% of the cases, the victim was an isolated person.
In 27,1 % of the cases, the first call was anonymous.
The Center responded to these calls in several possible manners:
Active listening (in 83% of our contacts),
Giving information (61%),
Directing people to other authorities (in 12%),
Contact with a person who can act responsibly or accompany the victim (in 26%),
Coordination (in 4 %),
Coordination and visit on the spot (in 6%).
