NPI Scale In The Demented And Non-Demented Elderly: Comparative Data
Ylieff, M., Di Notte, D., De Lepeleire, J., Paquay, L., Buntinx, F.
The Neuropsychiatric Inventory-NPI (Cummings et al., 1994) is often used to evaluate psychological and behavioural disorders in the demented elderly. There exists little normative data on the Belgian population.
In the context of a field survey (Qualidem), NPI data was collected in 2004 in demented (N=228) and non-demented subjects (N=64). The overall population was 79% women and 21% men in institutions (80%) or at home (20%). It was divided into two age groups: 65-81 (25%) and 82 and over (75%).
The ?demented? group presented significantly more disorders (prevalence) in 8 NPI fields: Delusion, Hallucinations, Agitation, Anxiety, Apathy, Disinhibition, Aberrant Motor Behaviour and Appetite/eating disorders. The frequency of the disorders among the demented subjects was significantly higher in 2 fields: Agitation and Appetite/eating disorders. On the other hand, there was no significant difference between the two groups in terms of severity of disorders in the 12 behavioral areas.
This first data has a normative value. Additional analyses will specify the relationships with sex, age and place of residence.
