The Clinical Dementia Rating/Modified scale (CDR-M) for staging dementia
Ylieff, M, Di Notte, D., Paquay, L., De Lepeleire, J. Buntinx, F., Fontaine, O
Classic distinction between three stages (mild, moderate, severe) for staging dementia is too oversimplified. We have evaluated Clinical Dementia Rating Scale/Modified-CDR/M (Heyman et al., 1987). This scale is an adaptation of very well known CDR (Hughes et al., 1982) and it differentiates between 7 stages of dementia (normal, uncertain diagnosis, mild, moderate, severe, deep, terminal).
During a field study (Qualidem), relevance, sensitivity and feasibility of CDR-M were evaluated in a sample of 329 subjects (demented, MCI, normal)). CDR-M?s stages are related to some socio-demographic variables, cognitive disorders (MMSE, Camcog), degree of dependency (AGGIR, Katz), behavioral and psychological symptoms (CERAD) and quality of life (ADRQL). Moreover, stages are related to caregiver?s burden (ZBI). Scores are higher in "demented" group than in "mild cognitive impairment" and "normal" groups. These results are congruent with the international litterature.
