The immobilization syndrom
David BOUAZIZ, S BAILLEUX, PM TARDIEUX, P PRAS
Necessary each day to allow the evening rest , the bed rest is a common physical situation. It can however involve physiological and pathological modifications exposing of some complications , especially if :
- the immobilization is prolonged
- the patient is fragile and/or poly-pathological
The bed rest induced by an acute or a chronic invalidating disease must be regarded as a pathogenic event. At the hospital, in institution or in residence , it?s very important to :
- limit the indications and duration for fragile old patients
- inform the patient and his family of the possible complications
Even if all the complications have not the same gravity , all of them can involve and increase :
- hospitalisation time
- overcost of this one
- reduction in autonomy and quality of life.
Almost all of them can be prevented.
