Aim of the study: Results of our previous studies have shown that an increased level of circulating interleukin (IL)-8 in CRP-negative subjects can be a marker of the ?successful aging. In this analysis, we looked for the relationship between the functional status and plasma level of IL-8 in Polish centenarians.
Method: Analysis was performed on 136 participants of Polish Centenarians? Program (20 men, 116 women). Mean age in the studied population was 101.1 ? 1.2 years. Cognitive function was estimated using the Folstein?s Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE). Functional ability to perform basic activities of daily living (ADLs; i.e.: eating, dressing, bathing, transferring between a bed and a chair, using a toilet, controlling bladder and bowel) was evaluated semiquantitatively (1 ? no impairment, 2 ? mild, 3 ? severe impairment). IL-8 plasma level was measured using ELISA test.
Results: In 79% (108 persons), impairment in cognitive function (IC) was stated. Functional ability in these subjects was significantly lower than in those with normal cognition (NC) (12.6 ? 0.3 vs. 8.9 ? 0.5; p<0.0001). Intriguingly, plasma level of IL-8 was significantly lower in the IC group (IC: 98.4 ? 13.0; NC: 179.5 ? 52.6 pg/mL; p<0.05).
Conclusion: In Polish centenarians, functional ability was strongly related with their cognitive status. It is tempting to speculate that IL-8 may have an impact on the preservation of cognitive functions. However, to draw final conclusions it would be necessary to evaluate the level of circulating IL-6 to exclude any inflammatory process.
