IMPLEMENTING GERIATRICS AND GERONTOLOGY AS A NEW CURRICULUM FIELD IN MEDICAL SCHOOLS IN ROMANIA
Prada G, Fita I, Andries A
Situation in Romania differs very much from countries in Western Europe especially in terms of socio-economic circumstances. This poses specific challenges to a comprehensive geriatric network in general, including the section dealing with instruction in this area. Formal geriatric medical care has more than 50 years of tradition in Romania. Unfortunately, education in this field (both undergraduate and graduate) has a large lag. An analysis of the past and present situation in education for Geriatrics and Gerontology is made, taking into account the resources and demand. Regional distribution of training and teaching centers is evaluated. This distribution is very uneven: most of the facilities are located in the capital of the country. Several reasons for this situation are presented. Various forms of teaching Geriatrics and Gerontology are analyzed. There is also an important shortage of medical literature in native language in this area. Nevertheless, a significant experience in dealing with elderly patients exists. Some of this is assembled in several books, still not enough for the complexity of the issue. A comparison with conditions in countries with long tradition in teaching Geriatrics and Gerontology is made. Some aspects can be adopted, others need an adaptation to specific circumstances. The necessity of a coordinated effort and a common curriculum in all academic centers across the country is highlighted.
