DEMOGRAPHIC DEVELOPMENT AND AGE DIFFERENCIES IN HOSPITALIZATION RATE IN THE CZECH REPUBLIC

Kalvach Z,Snejdrlova M

The Czech Republic has been believed to belong to the eldest populations all over the world in the middle of this century. People over sixty created some 6 % of inhabitants in 1857 but they are expected to create almost 40 % in 2050. Life expectancy at birth became longer substantially after 1989 but there was an important difference in development of life expectancy at age of 65 in international comparison. There are also some age distinctions in consumption of health services in time of health system transformation after 1989, for example in hospitalisation rate. Women over 75 seem to be specially sensitive to senior-friendly or senior-negligent character of health care system or community services. Without good understanding and application of geriatric frailty, geriatric disability, comprehensive geriatric assessment or geriatric evaluation and management in common clinical practise many geriatric patients, above all women, continue to move in a vicious circle of specialised non-geriatric hospital units, readmissions, and nursing homes. Sometimes we are to think about ageism and gender discrimination. We present survey of life expectancies since 1900 as well as comparison of hospitalisation rates according to age and gender in the last twenty years.
