Introduction
In a previous study we found that the Belgian Guidelines for Prevention of Decubitus Ulcers (BGPDU) were incompletely followed. The aim of this study is to evaluate the implementation of a patient and family education program for pressure ulcer prevention in an aged home care population.
Methods
The intervention of our study is a teaching protocol, which was designed and pilot tested by a multidisciplinary expert panel.
A pretest-posttest design was used to evaluate the implementation of the protocol in a major home care organisation. Outcome measure is the prevalence (and the 95% confidence interval) of effective and ineffective measures for pressure ulcer prevention in a random sample of patients, before (April 27, 2005) and six months after the start of the implementation program (November 30, 2005). BGPDU is used as the referent standard to evaluate the effectiveness of the applied preventive measures.
Preliminar results
At baseline 4,906 patients of the study sample were older then 70 years, and among them there were 2,057 (41.9%) persons at risk for developing PU. The prevalence of effective PU prevention in this group was 11.7% (95% C.I.: 10.4% - 13.2%). The prevalence of ineffective measures was 78.1% (95% C.I.: 76.3% - 79.9%). No measures were administered in 10.0% (95% C.I.: 8.7% - 11.3%) of the group at risk. A significantly higher prevalence of effective measures and a reduction of ineffective measures and ?no measures? are expected in the posttest. Full results will be available in March 2006.
